Open Artist Call
Miami Murals: Climate Awakening

APP CLOSED..THANK YOU!
Dear Artist,

We need your help to wake us out of our apathy and to see and feel things differently. We are running out of time to solve the climate crisis, yet we are unaware, overwhelmed and divided. We need empathy and hope. We need a creative and spiritual awakening.
We need you to light fires under our butts.

Miami Murals: Climate Awakening is a first-of-its-kind collaborative citywide murals campaign to raise awareness and activism on local climate issues. We are selecting a cohort of ten extraordinary, talented and authentic local artists to take on the ultimate challenge to inspire and unite society to action on the climate crisis. We need the best local muralists, graphic designers, 3D artists and sound composers to form the "Wutang Clan" of Artists to ignite a new social movement for Miami. Can we change hearts, minds and actions #beforeitstoolate?

If interested, please apply by January 30. We will reach out for 1:1 and team-based interviews as we build the cohort in November 2017 - January 2018.

Sincerely,
Linda Cheung, Founder & Director of BITL & the Miami Murals Team

“Miami Murals: Climate Awakening”
Concept Proposal - July 2018 launch

Miami Murals: Climate Awakening is a yearlong series of A/R (augmented reality) enhanced murals promoting climate change awareness and local action across the Greater Miami cityscape. The murals would be accompanied by a mobile app that allows pedestrians to see and hear the artwork come to life when using their phone to scan the mural image. Miami Murals will open with its first mural and a PR event in April 2018 for Earth Month. Then, on the first Saturday of each month for a year, a new mural location will launch during an opening party to celebrate the artists, the message and the community. Miami Murals will increase the attention, conversation, and action around the urgency of local climate change issues and solutions for Miami.

The People - Concepts, artwork and messages will be collected from local youth, then incorporated into captivating A/R enhanced murals by a cohort of ten best-in-class local artists, including muralists, graphic designers and sound composers, who are selected for their integrity and talent through an application process. The artist cohort will be challenged to use their art to change people’s attitudes and behaviors about climate change while creating empathy, urgency, hope and motivation for change.

A Narrative Journey Across The City - Across the span of the project, the murals will be located in 12 different locations across Greater Miami. Locations will be selected for their significance within the climate change narrative. Examples include gentrification of places like Little Haiti and Liberty City, king tide flooding of low-lying communities like Shorecrest and sea level rise eroding Miami’s famous beaches. Miami Murals will invite residents and visitors to explore and better understand this urgent topic while understanding their city.

A Social Movement That Can Grow - Miami Murals will represent a social movement delivered through activist art and gamification. There will be a cooperative (as opposed to individual-based) contest running alongside the Miami Murals project soliciting calls to action from participants. Each mural will link to a strong call to action such as donating to a specific cause initiative or taking civic action. Actions (and other campaign metrics) will be tracked and credited to the social movement through our app and website. We will market a goal of surpassing 1 million collective actions taken, which if surpassed will unlock a very special exhibit and celebration event co-created by the cohort. Furthermore, we would allow additional building facades and artists (beyond the original cohort) to join the movement by contributing their own mural projects.

Where This Could Lead...we hope:
More conversations
More understanding
More action
An attraction unique to Miami
Local and national media attention
An earth conscious evolution of our world views

  • AR mural at Qualcomm office in San Diego

PR & Marketing Campaign
Each mural launch will be celebrated with an opening event and fair featuring local initiatives, merchants, and performers. We will also be producing a VICE-inspired series following the initiative and its local clan of artists. Other channels such as public buses, billboards, media and radio stations may be leveraged to market this project.

Financial Budget
The budget is still being finalized, but would include the following major components. We will be resourcefully seeking in-kind donations and sponsorships for:
  • Paint Supplies, Scaffolding and other Mural Supplies
  • Building Facades - free/ donated
  • A/R app development
  • Artist Stipend - The contribution of this artist cohort will be priceless, and we think it’s only fair to raise a monthly stipend to compensate the artists in a small way for their time, talent and passion (suggested $1K/mo x 10 artists x 15 month = $150,000)
  • Marketing and Other GNA
  • Opening Events
Revenues - This is a nonprofit initiative, the revenue model will consist of fundraising through grants and corporate product sponsorships. We will also find paths for monetization including auctioning off mural pieces and merchandise.
1:1 Matching for Cause Campaigns - Sometimes the call to action highlights a local initiative seeking donations. We may recruit corporate sponsors for matching 1:1.
